Bill Haley died 30 years ago today from a heart attack when aged 55.

He was a US rock 'n' roll pioneer.

His recording of Rock Around The Clock is possibly the biggest-selling non-Xmas song ever !

Elvis toured with him in 1955 & met him a few times after.

The biggest selling record ever is White Christmas by Bing Crosby with over 50 millions sales through the years.

Quite a few of the old rockers never made it to old age, apart from the accident victims. Bill, Roy, Elvis...

The Film Rock Around the Clock caused a sensation here in Ireland early 1956. I did not see it till a little later on when on school holidays from Manchester UK, where it was not shown for a time as they were considering banning it like they did with Marlon Brando's, The Wild One.

A few Teddy Boys ran amok in Manchester where it was shown at the Gaiety cinema in Manchester, late summer if memory serves? Young people clapped and stamped to the beat and danced in the aisles in those days.

Bill Haley is often very unfairly sidelined by some myopic Rock journalists. He owned 1956 in these parts back then. Don't know about Continental Europe.

Saw Bill a couple of times throughout the years including front row at the Albert Hall. I also met him in Charing Cross Road during 1964 and I still have his autograph. I also have the original 78 of 'Rock Around The Clock'. As regards jiving, there was nothing to touch his records.

Brian :cheers
