Jans, my fellow country man, mentioned a topic on
Elvis 78s worldwide would be more than welcome in this
section... Some rarities ( such as the one with picture
sleeve from Argentina) a.o. are 'scattered' around in some
of the running topics... But it would be really kool if some
of you can start posting your goodies under the above
banner: 'Cracking Records'...
I'm thinking of the really hard to find ( impossible to find?)
titles from Japan, South America, New Zealand, etc.
Looking forward to it! There's some ace collectors here
on monkey...Get going gents!

What a crackin' idea!
I ran up to my library, grabbed my camera phone
and ran trough my piles and piles of 78's!
(There are at least 6 in my collection:)

Ofcours I'll save my Belgian pressed '78's for a soon to
rise topic.
But I think these qualify for the type of Records Ger mentions.
Hope you like them, forgive the photo quality.

Great combination of titles pressed in South Africa

What a great start, guys!
Alan, thanks for remembering my request for Irish pressed HMV
shellac. It's at least 10 years ago when Chris Giles mentioned the
Irish made 78s... Funny enough, back then he knew of only 4
titles in excistence...! Playing For Keeps wasn't one of them!
Any idea when collectors started discovering the Irish pressings?
They are mega rare, aren't they?
The label looks so old in design, like it was done in the 1920s?!
Maybe it was done in the 1920s?! It would fit Caruso nicely...!
Niels, you keep surprising me! Didn't know you were also into
grandpa's shellac?! Kool stuff, daddy-o!

Jans, where do Good Luck Charm and Sentimental Me originated?
Brazil, perhaps?
We, at one point, must try to determine which country continued
the longest, pressing 78s?! South Africa, South America? GLC and
SM were both 1961 releases in the USA ? Or was it 62?

Never knew The Truth About Me was on 78 speed?! Must have
looked a bit dated to the kids in '56 who were gobbling up 45s
like cheeseburgers!

Yes it was done in the !920,s 30,s 40,s and possibly earlier than that, the Irish pressings are rare,I know of 12 different, some were done on RED and the rarer later Blue label,IP 1248 All Shook up was done on both types, there may be others on both,I have a friend who specializes on worlwide Elvis 78,s,if he answers an email which is not that often,I,ll ask him if he knows of any others,I got my first one in 1986,Alan.
UPDATE:The first HMV 78 with the nipper design was on a PinK Label in 1909,the label similar to the Irish HMV,s appeared in 1923.

UPDATED to 13 Irish 78,s I know of.

You send me the images with the acetates.
I can not clearly read where these are from, but I think Good Luck Charm and Sentimental Me are from Argentina.

78,s used a matrix numbering system different to 45,s,here are a few to help you identify a 78 if you cant read where its from,USA,Canada,UK,Norway,Germany,Belgium and New Zealand on RCA all used number 20,UK HMV ,Ireland HMV, New Zealand HMV and Japan used the Year numbering system F2,G2,H2 etc,Argentina,Uruguay used 1A,Italy used A25,South Africa used 71,Brazil used 82,Chile used 92 and Pakistan HMV used KDF with a matrix of 2xav similar to the UK HMV vinyl numbering system.Of course there are others but thats a nice few to go on with,Alan.

I have since learnt from Neils that very early Belgian 78,s had a prefix of 18 as well as 20.

Yes that much I do remember Jans, sending you the 2 images.
But at age 59 one sometimes forget things. Such as the countries
of their origin...
Alan thanks for filling us in.
When did they stop pressing 78s in the US?
Was One Night the final one?

Was this pressed on unbreakable vinyl instead of shellac?
RCA experienced with some of the later US titles releasing them
made of vinyl. A 'face lift' to make them lighter in weight and
unbreakable for teenagers to carry 'm around to parties, was one
of the reasons given by RCA at the time.

Thanks for the photo of the UK Hound Dog 78. It's the one I need to complete my 78 collection. It crops up more than Mess of Blues but finding in top condition is difficult.
Any monkeys got a spare or swap?
