Dutchland, you may wonder? Back in the mid 70s, somewhere at an Airport,
waiting for a connecting flight, this American hippy boy asked me for a sigarette,
and asked politely, but a tad stoned, where I came from? Amsterdam, I replied.
Oh wow! Amsterdam in Dutchland! He replied... Yes, Dutchland I confirmed.
Frikkin' Americans :D Dutchland!?

Back to bizniz. Below, the images from internet, of the first Dutch boot albums.
Starting in the early 70s...when Dowling and Colonna still did 9-5 jobs, in some
stuffy offices. 'Please Release Me' is the mother of ALL Elvis boots ( I think?)

I stepped in, circa 1979, with Radio Thrills ( pictured, is a black & white repro)
Mine had sepia and yellow colors added to the bl & wh photo) Couldn't find a
copy on the net. The 2nd one we did was From The Beach To The Bayou, songs
came from the US edition, with the same title, but with a different cover.
Around that time I'd also designed the MDQ album cover for Vic Colonna. That's
why it's included here. It was circa 1981, Loving You Sessions saw the light of day!
The red cover first, and yellow cover a few months later.

Here ends your todays history lesson on boots from Dutchland. Enjoy.
Anything I might have overlooked besides the 45rpm My Baby's Gone??

Those were the times. Thanks Ger.

I stepped in around the time of the first Laurel record.

I first thought you misspelled Deutschland...

When Please Release Me came out, I couldn't understand
the title?! I thought: why the hell did they use a Humperdink hit from
a couple of years before, for the title of an Elvis bootleg?!
Or as boots where named back then: 'Witte elpees'.
Inspired by 'White Wonder' the first bootleg, with Dylan tracks.
It sold tens of thousands. Put bootlegs on the map for good!
Every hippy had one! :D 'For the times they are a changing..'

Holy moley! How RARE is this front page of the English Record Mirror from
November 1970!? Up untill 10 minutes ago I never had laid eyes on this
incredible piece of Elvis bootleg history...Front page news on a UK big
selling pop newspaper! It's about 'Please Release Me', and......????

Mr Dekker, wouldn't you have loved having this rarity for the Bootleg
Evis book?!

Here the first edition from LP From the beach to the bayou (released in march 1978).

label: Graceland 101
tracklist:
side 1: Can’t help fallin’ in love (RO T 13 till 29) – Beach boy blues (SO T1-2-3)
side 2:
King Creole (E T 3-18) – Crawfish (F T 7) – Steadfast loyal and true (M T 6) - As long as I have you (N T 4-8) – Lover doll (H T 7 UD) – King Creole (EX T 13) - King Creole (SR T 8) - Wild in the country (“T 40”).

Sometimes the wrong track and take number is pasted before the song on the King Creole sessions. The next year the LP was re-released on the Moon label (Moon 8135) with the same tracks and a different cover.

Here a scan from the first edition.

That piece of info was told in the intro. Although in less words, Colonel.
Still, all your contributions are always welcome.

For the love of....I can't read it. Ive tried with a toy looking glass...
no luck though. Any of you, with a proper looking glass who can give a
rough idea what was written, back in '70 ?
Will be hugely appreciated!

Thanks for bringing back some great memories. When I was 13, I went to a record fair and bought the Elvis - Loving You Sessions, LAUREL issue for 10 pounds. The dealer (who later became my source for this material for several years) told me it was a the best Elvis album around at the time. When I got home and put it on the turntable I was very disappointed when I found out it only had one song over and over - 2 months pocket money, wasted! I then listened to it again and again over the coming weeks - I became hooked - the best purchase I ever made as a kid. It opened a whole new Elvis recording world for me. The next record fair I bought my next boot. I've never looked back.

Thanks guys.

Harry

Just remembered this story made the front page of the Official Elvis Presley Fan Club - Oct/Nov 1970, newsletter. How times have changed you can buy the latest crap CDR or DVDR for 20 quid nowadays.

Hi Ger,

In '76/early '77 I bought my first boots. I was aged 12 and didn't realize it were bootlegs, and what was so special about them. The reseller said it were, indeed, "witte platen". My dad said: "Buy them, you won't regret it".

I bought three at once: "The Hillbilly Cat 1954-1974" (the one you show here), "The Dorsey Shows" and "From the Waist Up" (the one with your "son of a bitch" poster in it).
The record store: "Sgt Peppers" in Rotterdam. (I came there via fan club mag "Elvisions").

Wow, this thread brings back long forgotten memories...

"I can't read it. Ive tried with a toy looking glass...

I can't read it neither, but if you're really interested, perhaps this site will give (sell) you the answer:

Cheers,
Mike

Hot damn, my eyes are bad, but I can read it. Here you go.

Elvis has been bootlegged. A new pirate album called “Please Release Me” is circulating for about £5 a copy – and credited to ‘Aaron P’.

The tracks on the album are Fame And Fortune, Stuck On You, Teddy Bear, Got A Lot Of Living To Do, Treat Me Nice, Jailhouse Rock, A Cane And A High Starched Collar, The Lady Loves Me, C’mon Everybody, Dominique and Baby What You want Me To Do. In addition the album includes a five minute radio interview with Elvis.

All the songs have been illegally recorded from television shows and films: the first two tracks from the Frank Sinatra Show, the next four are all film versions of songs Presley has recorded before, while A Cane And A High Starched Collar, from the film Flaming Star has never been officially released. The next three tracks are from the film Love In Las Vegas and Stay Away Joe, finishing with Baby What You Want Me To Do, taken from Presley’s own television show – and incidentally featuring him on guitar.
The album’s sleeve includes a drawing of Presley and liner notes and credits the record company as 1st Records.

Comments Elvis Monthly magazine, The main thing about this pirate disc is the sound quality- most of it is excellent.

With the album there is also a bootleg single recorded, according to the label by Aaron P with Scotty and Bill. The two tracks, My Baby Is Gone and Baby Let’s Play House were both recorded when Presley was with Sun Records.

The album and the single were both offered to Presley fans at the Luxembourg Convention recently where the asking price for both was £4 10s.

thanks, brother John. Great job!
I didn't know the single My Baby's Gone was released around the same
time as the Please Release Me album?! Thought it was on a later date?
Tried hard to find an image of the MBG 45rpm label on the net...No such
luck. Only later day re-releases are pictured. The original label was either
yellow, or white... Aron P label ? It came in a thin sleeve with the same
illustration used as on the Please Release Me album.

Colonel Snow?!

Below a later day re-release...

I was at the Luxembourg convention in 1970 and bought both the PRM LP and the My Baby's Gone single which had an identical sleeve to the album (but maybe a different title?). I still have both in immaculate condition, but not immediately to hand.

I also later bought the mauve version of the single, but in a plain sleeve. I remember "Baby Let's Play House" sounded terrific. I still have that single, too. I also have the Beach To The Bayou LP, the version with the yellow/rainbow type border. I then had about a 20-year hiatus in buying bootlegs, from around 1978 to 1998 - couldn't afford (young family) and didn't have a source anyway.

The Italian Flash strikes again!

The 'Sun' label with Aaron P singing is the original, and so is
the illustration sleeve. Strange, they could have used My Baby's Gone
title on the front cover?!
Great detective work Alvise. Thanks!

Unfortunately I did not own a camera until Christmas 1973 and didn't own a 35mm one until 1978 when my daughter was born. The world of photography has moved on light years in the meantime, if you'll forgive the pun.

Any idea, Ger, who did the Elvis sketch for PRM - could it have been Hans Langbroek ? It's brilliant, even 42 years later.

You have an eye for detail, Steve! It was indeed Hans who made the line illustration.
