Gene Vincent would have been 76 today.

He suffered a fatal burst stomach ulcer in 1971, when aged 36.

Gene was a 1950's original rocker, having several hits in the Elvis-style including Be-Bop-A-Lula and Blujean Bop.

Many people [including Gladys Presley] thought that Be-Bop-A-Lula was by Elvis himself when it was first played on the radio.............

Only a limited response to this thread on here.

Unlike over there, where it's taken off !

Had to smile at the Doc's antics !

A poster has put up a photo which the Mad Medic thinks is a reverse image.

The poster has pointed out that it's exactly the way it came out of the photo booth [after all it's a pic of himself] !

DJC reckons the machine reversed it during the processing !

I collect his stuff. The post Captiol years are just so so but his fifties and early sixties music is great.

Strange man!.

Saw Gene many times on stage in the UK over the years. Fantastic 'live' performer. Have his box set containing the complete Capitol and Columbia recordings.

If someday I have a lot of money, both Bear Family Vincent's boxes are on my "to buy" list.

Trev compiled a pretty neat cd for Bear Family, The Ballads of Gene Vincent. I love to listen to that but have to skip Scarlet Ribbons, it makes me cry like a baby.

So, what's your theory about where those ribbons come from ?

I have one.

This is a pretty good version of Unchained Melody!

Quite different arrangement, compared to Elvis' version!

While I'm at it; Here's a couple of other Elvis related songs recorded by Gene Vincent! :cheers

Gene's version of Frankie And Johnny

Gene's version of Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain

Gene's version of Rip It Up

Gene's version of Ready Teddy

Gene's version of Your Cheatin' Heart

Gene's version of Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On

Gene's version of My Babe

Thanks for them. I've not took much interest in Gene before but might pull out my greatest hits of his to give it a listen.

The guy overhears his young daughter praying for some scarlet ribbons for her hair.

It's late & the shops are shut.

He can't locate any.

Early in the morning, he peeps in her room & the ribbons are 'in gay profusion' lying there !

Well, the girl's mother overheard her too, & found the said ribbons in her needlework box !

Mystery solved !

No 'Guardian Angel' required !

Any serious Elvis scholar knows that Be-Bop-->A-Lula is not an Elvis song. Apparently, Gladys didn't study the mystery of Elvis Presley with the devotion the subject requires.

Hope it helps.

You're judging things from the perspective of now !

Hearing Gene's voice, way in the background, coming out indistinctly from a car radio back then, Gladys [or anyone else] could be forgiven for thinking it was Elvis !

There was even a story [probably apocryphal] that Scotty & Bill, when they heard it, were convinced he'd done some recording without them !

This was one of my research points: anyone who is under that impression upon listening to Bebop-A-Lula is seriously misguided and has not delved into the mystery of Elvis Presley like award-winning biographer --> Peter Guralnick has.

As I pointed out, you, Guralnick & everybody else can only listen to it retrospectively !

Your starting point is from the safe knowledge that it's not Elvis !

Hearing it over the radio back then, I can quite understand how some thought it was our boy !

But, of course, I could be simply 'seriously misguided' ....................

Have you ever observed that basically everyone outside Berkeley is seriously misguided?

Wikipedia claims that Elvis covered Be-Bop-A-Lula, btw.

It"s hard going trying to Ban Gene ... Ma Presley had the cork out of the bottle when she heard BE BOP A LULA!.

But i love both of them ... one hated parker, the other could sing like an angel!.

That"s my view your worship!.
