As I cannot post on FECC I would like to put my thoughts on "luckyjackson1"'s post here - I'm sure he'll see it!

http://www.elvis-collectors.com/forum/v ... =1&t=67528

I personally think that the version of this song on the original release of "A Legendary Performer Volume 4" is a splice of the different takes (attempts) of the song that Joan Deary had at the time (Like many other tapes in her hands this tape is now lost!!!!), as listed on my site detailing her notes at the time.

Without asking Ernst, I would assume all he has is the complete version of the song (Along with the 'Platinum' version) on the tape he has so that's all he releases now. He probably doesn't even know about the differences to the "A Legendary Performer Volume 4" version. To be perfectly honest - I didn't, until NOW.

I've always had the ALP v4 version as a stand alone never released on official CD version. It's pretty obvious it's different. As for whether it's a splice or not, or whether there are other takes, who knows?

So the tapes that you describe on your site (the home recordings from Germany) are lost now? If that's so, where have the songs released on In A Private Moment etc. come from?

I love talking about the home recordings. I wish we could get more of them in complete form like the one released on Behind Closed Doors a couple of years ago.

No, I assume the tape Joan Deary put together / spliced (if she did?) of the song 'I'm Beginning To forget You' as used on "A Legendary Performer Volume 4" is now lost, and that's why Ernst didn't use it on later releases including the "Complete Masters" set. Either that or he didn't check and just assumed it was the same version on the tape he has!

I haven't listened to all of these home recordings in great depth (too hard on the ears!) but I knew there was a slight difference between the versions on "A Legendary Performer Volume 4" and "Home Recordings" / "Complete Masters", hence the + in the listing of the song on my site.

If they're too hard on your ears send me all the home resordings you have and I'll listen to them in-depth. I love this stuff.

I think the version on A Legendary Performer Volume 4 is excellent! I wish Elvis had tried this one in the studio after he got out of the Army.

Yeah, me too!

Thank you so much Keith, for your assistance on this behalf. Sorry for answering that late, my Elvis-Collectors.com page cannot be displayed at work any longer... :-(

So great to see you post here, that was one reason why I registered here - and thanks again to "KingElvis" from FECC for the link!

It was really easy for me to recognize on the very first listen that the version released in 1999 was NOT the same performance as on ALP4 (because I listened to that one a zillion times before).
I was kinda irritated by some comments so I did a hour-long comparison of the two versions again, to verify I'm not going insane! :D

I really don't want to brag now, but:
Quite a few years back I brought up the theory that the ending of "It's Now Or Never" might have been spliced (that was even before an outtake was released) - nobody believed me and told me I was crazy (although some people actually heard the strange noise on the ending, what eventually was the part where it's been spliced). I finally had the verification when the "Fame And Fortune" FTD was released.

If you remember I confirmed that the outtakes of "Padre" as used on the "Elvis (Fool)" FTD were exactly the same takes (with kind regards to George Smith who realized it in the first place).

Also I'm obviously one of the very few people who hear a bad piano note on the ending of the "Young And Beautiful" master...

I think I have a pretty good sense of hearing - especially when it comes to Elvis.

Have a great weekend!

Welcome Lucky. You should check out a couple of sections on here if you like these things, Stop Look & Listen, and Rarities and Oddities. We need some more info in there.

Good to see you here "luckyjackson1"

I've emailed Ernst this week and asked if he can explain the situation with this song, because to be honest we're all just guessing!

I'll let you know when he replies

Fantastic, Keith! Thank you very much. Looking forward to Ernst's reply. smt125

One of the biggest surprises in the Elvis world was when I learned that the master of "Jailhouse Rock" was a composite take - still fascinating stuff!
Have a great sunday.

Me too. I was always so impressed that he did that whole throat ripping vocal in one. Jailhouse Rock was the first single I ever bought, and we didn't even have a record player at the time.

If I ever did Desert Island Discs, JR would definitely be one of the songs I'd take to the island.

Interesting Keith. I have four versions in my chronological Elvis file on computer and they are 2.58 ( Greetings From Germany ), 2.24 ( In A Private Moment ), 0.56 Platinum Disc 2 ) & 2.19 respectively ( Complete Masters ) What length does the Leg 4 version run at?

The Greetings from Germany clip the one from the Legendary Volume 4, so it runs the same length.

mrbthebarber, the one on "In A Private Moment" and the "Complete Masters" are both the same performances. The one on "Greetings From Germany" is the same as on ALP4, I assume - I don't have the CD but I think it's the same included on "Songs To Sing" - the one with the "boiled eggs" dialogue on the beginning.

Ernst has been very bust lately but he finally replied to me regarding this song. He confirmed that there have been three different versions released and I have amended my page to reflect his confirmation.

I'm Beginning To Forget You (NPA5 5821)
A Legendary Performer Volume 4° (Vinyl)~Greetings From Germany°
(Track 21)~Songs To Sing° (Wrongly dated 1960)~Loose Ends Vol 1°
~From The Bottom Of My Heart° (Wrongly dated 1960)

Dialogue / I'm Beginning To Forget You (WPA5 2592)
Platinum 2° (Wrongly dated 1961)~Greetings From Germany° (Track 24)

I'm Beginning To Forget You (Incomplete - Tape ends while Elvis is singing)
Complete Elvis Presley Masters 30 (Sony)°~Home Recordings° (Edited)
~In A Private Moment (FTD)° (Faded - 2:18)

Thanks, Keith.

So to sum it up... another mistake on The Complete Elvis Presley Masters set.

The version from A Legendary Performer - Volume 4 is the one that should have appeared on The Complete Masters set.
