The quotation is often mis-quoted as:

"Better to have loved in vain than to have never loved at all"

Or something similar.

Meaning it's better to have loved someone, even if it's an unrequited love, than to have never loved anyone.

When people speak to each other, even if they are using the same language [example: English] they don't always understand each other.

It's as if they're talking in another language !

Colin's a coy one though. Maybe he tripped the trap on purpose, so no one else would be injured. He's a hard one to figure out.
