I've just been listening to Love Letters From Elvis FTD for the first time this past couple of weeks, and it is my current favorite. I am really enjoying it. I will admit that I love listening to This Is Our Dance and I'll Never Know without all the overdubs. I'm not a hater of all 70's overdubs, but I always found the Love Letters album cringeworthy in it's heavy use of syrupy flutes.

This Is Our Dance may not have been the best song, and maybe not appropriate if he wanted to be a contemporary relevant artist in 1971, but I enjoy listening to him make it the best it can be, and he sings it beautifully. I'll Never Know strikes me as one of those corny, easily disposable songs that Elvis makes beautiful by not over-performing it but just thoughtfully, if simply, expressing the sentiment and pretty melody.

From the horses mouth - Les Reed OBE.

"This Is Our Dance' was not written with Elvis in mind. Geoff (Stevens) and I wanted to come up with another 'Last Waltz' and this title and treatment suited our needs very well. Outside of sending the song to Freddy (Bienstock), I already had an artist in mind called Ken Dodd, who wanted a follow-up to his massive No.1 hit recording of 'Tears'. Geoff and I came up with 'Tears Won't Wash Away Your Heartaches', which became a hit for him, but 'This Is Our Dance' ended up as an album track for Ken Dodd. I was always a little surprised that Elvis recorded this song, as it came right in the middle of the MOR genre, and suited the totally ballad type of singer such as Engelbert/Des O'Connor etc. But who's complaining? Elvis performed the song beautifully."

The above is taken from an Interview given with 'Essential Elvis' Magazine and printed in the May/June 2009 Issue.

Colin reminds me of the "Uncle Leo" character in "Seinfeld".
When caught shoplifting, his alibi was "I'm an old man, I'm confused!"

I like This Is Our Dance, too. Difficult to explain to Polk Salad Annie fans.

For the last few days after reading this damned thread I've every once in a while for no apparent reason busted out with "this is ouuuuuur dance, darling forever, it's ourrrrr dance, love me foreverrrrrr" I can't even remember if those are the right words or not..... So, anyway, as I took my son to school this morning, i scrolled through the old ipod (it kicked & screamed, and begged me not to) I played the damn song....yes, it's a shit heap alright. It's always nice to hear Elvis sing. It nearly always brings a smile to my face. Though I tapped my foot a few times -only because it was him- the song should have gone down on the Titanic, only it wasn't written yet. It's not worthy of the King, sorry Brad. As was noted previously - how do you explain this one to the Polk Salad audience? Remember the blonde in TTWII that curls up in her own lap shrieking during Suspicious minds? How do you break this one to her?

It should never have happened.

No soup? What do I have to like in order not to have to "eat" the main dish? And the polk salad?

How about Old Shep?
